Day 51: Results!

Today we finished data collection and started crunching numbers for the hanging masses lab. The results are gorgeous. The equation for the distance d the center mass sags with equal side masses m and center mass M, pulleys separated by L (see the handout here) is 

It took us a couple of days for us to work through the physics and algebra to get to that point. LoggerPro will graph a model AND a fit of the data, and both curves are shown in the picture, though it’s hard to see. Nice results when theory and reality are barely distinguishable for something fairly complicated like this!
