Day 124: Physics is Fun!

A student came to me today with some questions about his project for Engineering Design and Development, a class where students work all year to develop a prototype of a marketable product. They are building a lawn chair with adjustable legs. He took my college physics class last year, and we had spent time earlier this year looking at the required coefficient of friction for the feet of the chair and some other force analyses. Now he wanted to show that the legs should not flex significantly under load.

I haven’t done much with stress and strain, but between he, I, and Ben, who worked a couple years as an Engineer before becoming a teacher, we were able to point him in the right direction. Since I was learning some things for the first time, and I was excited, but scribbles on the office whiteboard aren’t the most legible. But it was fun to learn something new!
